Another Red One Film Take Top Honours12 Oct 2009 Debut feature by Writer/Director Ben Wheatley and Director of Photography Laurie Rose ‘Down Terrace’ recently won Best UK Feature at this year’s Raindance Film Festival. Shot in a very small terrace house with a very small crew in Brighton, in a very short period of time, this darkly comic and deeply disturbing slice of social surrealism had already won ‘Best Screen Play’ and ‘Best New Wave Feature’ at Fantastic Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
DoP, Laurie Rose with the support of Aimimage Camera Company was able to shoot on a RED One with a set of Zeiss Superspeeds in 4K resolution. “Given our zero-production time, availability of cast and crew and the size of our location we decided that the film should be handheld. This meant we could move fast, get coverage, help with the pacing of the film and make it feel very natural and real” say’s Laurie, “but the RED One is actually really, REALLY heavy once you have everything bolted on. Battery, drives, follow focus, matte box etc. but decided not to use the RED EVF as it was just too heavy and difficult to mount for hand-held.”
“Michael White at Aimimage was fantastic in helping me put together a fantastic camera and lighting package that suited our budget perfectly, I was really happy with the softer more natural look of the Superspeeds with T1.3 and I also carried the marginally slower 14mm Ultra as my widest lens having tested a 10 and 12mm which proved to be too bendy in the close shooting conditions.”
Shockingly this ultra-low budget award winning film was shot in only 8 days, Rose says: “we're all very proud of it and can't wait to make another one. This time we might take the luxury of maybe 2 weeks. And if we do, I will be using a Red One and I’ll be getting it from Aimimage. “
