Young DOP Shoots Drama On 35mm03 Dec 2009 Cinematography graduate Dan Stafford-Clark has had a busy 2009 considering he only left the NFTS in March. Most recently he has just wrapped DOTS, a commissioned drama by Director Jess Lux, shot in 35mm on the Arricam LT. DOTS is about a first year University student who arrives at St Andrews and immediately feels alienated from the other superficial upper-class females. The film was financed in part by the UK Film Council and shot on location at the University of St. Andrews, in Scotland.
Dan has been building a name for himself as a versatile young cameraman capable of creating a distinctive look on any format. He has been shooting back to back on the Red One, Super16, and the Canon 7D. His graduation short BY THE GRACE OF GOD was selected in the Official Short Film Competition in Cannes this year. The film used “every format imaginable” including spy cameras, 16mm, Hi-8, MiniDV, “the final on-line had 30 different layers of image” says Dan. “It was exciting working with so many formats, but it was all about making the formats work with and for the story. It kind of fell together as we went along as the best way of complementing the storytelling.”
With DOTS Dan was able to work with Peter Bryant at ICE and Mike Robinson at Aimimage to pull together a fantastic 35mm shooting options “the camera was faultless, and the 400ft and 1000ft magazines gave us options to shoot long takes. It was a real pleasure shooting on 35mm”says Dan.
