Broadcasting Live With Dr.Feelgood

06 Feb 2010

Tuesday 2 February 2010 saw the sold-out world premiere of Julian Temple's new documentary Oil City Confidential, on the infamous 1970s sub-rock act Dr.Feelgood. The film was broadcast by satellite live to 50 cinemas across the UK. After the screening there was a live musical performance at Koko in Camden. “Its about creating an event and excitement around your film,” says Oil City Confidential Producer Steve Malit.

The documentary was shot over an 18 month period by Cinematographer Steve Organ on the Sony HDW 900R camera. The film incorporates archive performances, new interviews, and a reconstruction of some of the bands formative moments. The live premiere was followed by a 1-hour music set presented by Keith Allen and included performances from the original Dr.Feelgood guitarist WIlko Johnson and Alison Moyet. The live show was lit by DoP Steve Organ and filmed by a 6-man camera team who “worked like a well oiled machine to get the live show out fast and without a glitch” says Michael White Camera Liaison officer. Arquiva handled the actual OB and satellite transmission.

The Koko event is the first in a series of live screenings and performance of the film, with events planned in Paris (for digital broadcast across Europe), and in New York (for digital broadcast across the USA) in early May. For Malit “it’s still cinema. It’s still theatrical. But its changing from blocking out 120 cinemas for two weeks and then seeing how it goes to something a bit more live and now.”
